Type: Honey Festival
Minden — the historic county seat of Douglas County in the Carson Valley, Nevada's premier agricultural basin set between the Carson Range of the Sierra Nevada and the Pine Nut Mountains — hosts this spring festival celebrating the valley's exceptional alfalfa, sweet clover, and high-desert wildflower honey production. The Carson Valley is Nevada's agricultural heartland: irrigated by the Carson River and sheltered by the Sierra Nevada, it supports extensive alfalfa seed production that creates world-class honey forage, while the adjacent Great Basin's rabbitbrush, bitterbrush, and desert wildflowers contribute to a distinctly Nevada honey character unlike anything produced in the American West. The festival features a Nevada honey varietal tasting comparing Carson Valley alfalfa, Sierra Nevada foothill sage, and Great Basin desert wildflower characters, Basque heritage cooking demonstrations incorporating local honey in traditional pastries and preserves, Carson Valley alfalfa farm tours showing the relationship between seed production and premium honey yield, educational presentations from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension on desert and mountain colony management, and a juried Nevada honey show with amateur and commercial categories.
