Tarrywile Park's historic mansion grounds host this late-October harvest fair celebrating the honey heritage of western Connecticut's Housatonic hill country, featuring beekeepers from Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties who produce the distinctive basswood, goldenrod, and apple blossom honeys unique to the Housatonic watershed's sheltered valleys and hardwood ridges. Western Connecticut's honey character differs markedly from the coastal zone: the higher elevation, cooler temperatures, and greater forest cover of the Housatonic highlands create a later but more concentrated honey flow dominated by basswood and black locust in early summer, followed by a rich goldenrod and aster harvest in autumn, producing the thick, full-flavored honeys that have made the Litchfield Hills region a destination for artisan honey enthusiasts.
