Type: Honey Festival
Greenwood — South Carolina's 'Emerald City' in the heart of the Upper Savannah River Piedmont — sits in the plateau country where the Blue Ridge foothills meet the Fall Line, creating the botanically rich transition zone producing some of South Carolina's most complex multi-floral honey. Lakelands region beekeepers harvesting from the sourwood stands of the nearby Sumter National Forest, the gallberry bogs of Edgefield County wetlands, and the tulip poplar forests blanketing the Piedmont between the Blue Ridge and Sandhills all converge here for this early summer festival. The festival features a South Carolina regional honey competition with separate classes for sourwood, gallberry, tulip poplar, and Piedmont wildflower entries; educational sessions on South Carolina-specific colony management challenges in the upper Piedmont's hot humid summers; live demonstrations from Lander University's campus apiary program; honey and beeswax artisan market; native pollinator garden installations created in partnership with Clemson Extension; and a guided tour of the Ninety Six National Historic Site's surrounding landscape illustrating how the Piedmont's natural vegetation supports one of the Carolinas' most diverse honey flows from early spring black locust through summer sourwood and into fall aster and goldenrod.
